<p>Ein <b>Pyroklast</b> (von <span style="font-style:normal;font-weight:normal"><a href="Altgriechische_Sprache" title="Altgriechische Sprache">altgriechisch</a></span> <span lang="grc-Grek" class="Grek" style="font-style:normal">πῦρ</span> pyr „Feuer“ und <span lang="grc-Grek" class="Grek">κλαστός</span> klastós „zerbrochen“) ist ein (Gesteins-)Fragment, das durch Zerreißen oder Zerbrechen (Fragmentierung) oder durch direkte Kristallisierung infolge <a href="Vulkan" title="Vulkan">vulkanischer</a> Aktivität aus einem festen oder flüssigen vulkanischen Ausgangsmaterial entstanden ist. Die Korngröße von Pyroklasten, die interne Struktur und die chemisch-mineralogische Zusammensetzung sind variabel. Die individuelle Form spielt lediglich bei der Bezeichnung von einigen Pyroklastentypen eine Rolle. Pyroklasten werden durch ballistischen Auswurf (mit eventueller folgender Verdriftung durch Wind und Luftströmungen) oder durch Fließen am Boden in Dichteströmen (<a href="Pyroklastischer_Dichtestrom" title="Pyroklastischer Dichtestrom">Gas-Partikel-Gemische</a>) transportiert, im Gegensatz zur Entstehung von vulkanischen Gesteinen aus Lavaströmen. Pyroklasten bilden per definitionem den Hauptanteil (> 75 %) der <a href="Pyroklastisches_Sediment" title="Pyroklastisches Sediment">pyroklastischen Ablagerungen</a>.

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Definition">Definition</h2></div>

<p>Pyroklasten sind Einzelkristalle, Kristallbruchstücke, Glas oder Gesteinsfragmente, die bei einem explosiven Ausbruch eines Vulkans entstanden sind. Dabei können die Pyroklasten beim Ausbruch bereits fest oder noch flüssig gewesen sein. Die interne Struktur (siehe aber unten) und die mineralogisch-chemische Zusammensetzung spielen bei der Definition keine Rolle. Die individuelle Form ist dagegen zur Klassifizierung einzelner Pyroklastentypen wichtig.

</p><p>Pyroklasten im engeren Sinne dürfen keine Anzeichen aufweisen, dass sie wiederaufgearbeitet worden sind, d. h. die äußere Gestalt, die diese Fragmente während der Entstehung oder des Transports (ballistischer Transport oder Transport in pyroklastischen Dichteströmen) angenommen haben, darf keine Anzeichen auf Wiederaufarbeitung aufweisen. Sie können jedoch bei oder kurz nach der Ablagerung in ihrer Gestalt verändert werden, etwa durch partielle Aufschmelzung und Verformung durch die Auflast überlagernder Pyroklasten oder durch interne Korn/Korn-Bewegungen in den Ablagerungen.

</p><p>Umgelagerte Pyroklasten, also schon einmal abgelagerte und erneut transportierte Pyroklasten, werden auch „wiederaufgearbeitete Pyroklasten“ genannt, <a href="Klasten" title="Klasten">Klasten</a> unsicherer Herkunft werden als „Epiklasten“ bezeichnet.

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Klassifikation">Klassifikation</h2></div>

<p>Pyroklasten werden anhand der <a href="Korngr%C3%B6%C3%9Fe" title="Korngröße">Korngröße</a> <a href="Klassifizierung" title="Klassifizierung">klassifiziert</a>. Die IUGS (<a href="International_Union_of_Geological_Sciences" title="International Union of Geological Sciences">International Union of Geological Sciences</a>) empfiehlt folgende Einteilung:

</p>

<ul><li><a href="Vulkanische_Bombe" title="Vulkanische Bombe">Bomben</a> (> 6,4 cm). Die äußere Form und Oberfläche weisen Anzeichen auf, dass der Pyroklast während Entstehung und Transport geschmolzen war</li>

<li><a href="Vulkanischer_Block" title="Vulkanischer Block">Blöcke</a> (> 6,4 cm). Die eckige oder gerundet-eckige Form weist darauf hin, dass der Pyroklast zum Zeitpunkt der Entstehung fest war</li>

<li><a href="Lapilli" title="Lapilli">Lapilli</a> (0,2 bis 6,4 cm), kleine Pyroklasten beliebiger Form</li>

<li><a href="Vulkanische_Asche" title="Vulkanische Asche">Asche</a> (< 0,2 cm), sehr kleine Pyroklasten beliebiger Form. Sie können weiter in grobe Aschenkörner (0,2 mm bis <span class="bruch template-frac" style="line-height:0"><sup style="font-size: 70%; vertical-align: 0.4em;">1</sup>⁄<sub style="font-size: 70%; vertical-align: 0em;">16</sub></span> mm) und feine Aschenkörner oder Aschenstaub (< <span class="bruch template-frac" style="line-height:0"><sup style="font-size: 70%; vertical-align: 0.4em;">1</sup>⁄<sub style="font-size: 70%; vertical-align: 0em;">16</sub></span> mm) unterteilt werden.</li></ul>

<p>Daneben existiert auch noch eine ältere Einteilung von Sohn & Cough (1989)<sup id="cite_ref-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>, die heute gelegentlich immer noch angewendet wird:

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Blasigkeit_und_Fragmentierung">Blasigkeit und Fragmentierung</h2></div>

<p>Die meisten Pyroklasten sind mehr oder weniger blasig (vesikulär). Blasenkeime bilden sich, wenn ein gasreiches Magma aufsteigt und es zur Druckentlastung kommt. Das Magma kann für eine oder mehrere Gasphasen übersättigt werden und die Blasenkeime werden durch Diffusion und Dekompression rasch größer. Dies führt nahe der Erdoberfläche zur Bildung eines Magmaschaumes, der beim Austritt explosiv fragmentieren und Pyroklasten bilden kann.

</p><p>Phreatomagmatische Vorgänge fragmentieren das aufdringende Magma ebenfalls sehr stark. Im Gegensatz zur explosiven Entgasung von Magma sind diese Partikel deutlich weniger blasig und damit ein wichtiger Hinweis auf diesen Entstehungsprozess.

<p>Pyroklastische Ablagerungen oder Pyroklastika werden so bezeichnet, wenn sie zu mehr als 75 % aus Pyroklasten bestehen. Der Rest kann aus Epiklasten, chemischen, biogenen oder anderen <a href="Sedimente_und_Sedimentgesteine" title="Sedimente und Sedimentgesteine">Sedimentgesteinen</a> bestehen. Ein Vulkantyp, bei dem überwiegend oder fast ausschließlich pyroklastische Lockerprodukte gefördert werden, ist der <a href="Tuffvulkan" class="mw-redirect" title="Tuffvulkan">Tuffvulkan</a>. Dagegen fördern <a href="Schildvulkan" title="Schildvulkan">Schildvulkane</a> überwiegend <a href="Lava" title="Lava">Lava</a> und nur wenige Pyroklasten.

</p><p>Pyroklastische Ablagerungen werden einerseits nach der Korngröße der Pyroklasten, anderseits nach der Art des Transports in pyroklastische <a href="Pyroklastische_Flie%C3%9Fablagerung" title="Pyroklastische Fließablagerung">Fließ-</a> und <a href="Pyroklastische_Fallablagerung" title="Pyroklastische Fallablagerung">Fallablagerungen</a> unterschieden.

</p><p>Lockere, noch unverfestigte pyroklastische Ablagerungen (Sedimente) werden auch als <i>Tephra</i> bezeichnet. Werden pyroklastische Lockersedimente verfestigt, spricht man von pyroklastischen Gesteinen.
